Academic Overview

At MSA, we are pleased to offer the Canadian Alberta Curriculum Programs of Study at all grade levels as the basis of our programming. MSA must meet the rigorous requirements of the Alberta Education Accreditation requirements in order to offer this world-class curriculum. In international tests, such as the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test, Alberta students outscored the other Canadian provinces in reading and science and were second in math. Globally, they ranked second in reading and science and seventh in math. (PISA 2022 results)

Alberta’s commitment to developmentally appropriate learning progression, emphasis on English language arts as a foundation for all learning, the development of fair and consistent assessment practices, the integration of STEM, and the use of certified teachers in the development of curriculum at all levels ensure that Alberta has one of the best education systems in the world.

Students thrive and excel when this curriculum is combined with the values of Christian education that have been the foundation of MSA. Curriculum Overview

Alberta’s education system is recognized internationally as one of the best learning systems in the world, and MSA must meet rigorous requirements in order to offer this world-class curriculum. Schools that are granted permission to use the curriculum must provide a common program for Kindergarten to Grade 12 that is linked to specific learner outcomes for each subject area.

Alberta is committed to providing a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate, has an emphasis on English language arts as a foundation for all learning, employs fair and consistent assessment practices, integrates technology, and uses certificated teachers in the development of curriculum at all levels in order to ensure that it remains current and focused on what students need to know.

With a focus on literacy, numeracy and competencies, the Alberta curriculum strives to:

  • Reflect the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students need to be well-prepared for future learning and for the world of work
  • Ensure that each grade provides a foundation of knowledge for successful learning in subsequent years
  • Anticipate and plan for the needs of the future by considering the changes and developments in society, such as trends in employment, globalization, advances in technology, and stewardship of the environment
  • Provide learners with attitudes, skills, and knowledge that will enable them to become engaged, active, informed, and responsible citizens
  • Consider students’ needs and abilities—intellectual, social, emotional, and physical—at different ages and stages of growth
  • Develop skills that are necessary for success in learning a subject
  • Consider new research on effective teaching methods and how students learn best
  • Reflect the most appropriate level at which the skills are to be acquired
  • Integrate how the study of a subject contributes to student personal growth and development
  • Accommodate learning in different environments
  • Consider various ways of delivering a program to students, including innovative opportunities using print, digital, distributed, community, and workplace resources.

Alberta Education is a leader in development and revision of curricula. Through public consultations, including input from teachers, principals, parents, education experts, post-secondary representatives and community members, it ensures that curriculum continually meets the needs of students and that there is a smooth transition from grade to grade and to post-secondary and the world of work.
